About Syracuse Women's Rowing

Syracuse University’s women’s rowing team, established in 1977, has evolved into a formidable force in collegiate rowing.

Syracuse Women’s Rowing was established in 1977 as a club sport before quickly gaining varsity status, reflecting the broader national growth in women’s collegiate athletics following Title IX. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the program laid a solid foundation, building competitiveness in the Northeast rowing scene. Although they did not reach the national stage during this period, the team steadily developed under committed coaching and increasing university support. Their training on Onondaga Lake helped foster a strong rowing culture, setting the groundwork for future success in the 2000s and beyond. By 2000, the program was poised to take the next step.

During their tenure in the BIG EAST Conference from 2001 to 2013, the Orange secured three consecutive conference titles from 2001 to 2003 and consistently earned podium finishes, including bronze medals in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2013. The team’s first NCAA Championship appearance came in 2002, marking a significant milestone in the program’s early history . Since transitioning to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2013, Syracuse has maintained a strong presence, achieving top-three finishes every season and culminating in their first ACC championship title in 2024.

‍

The 2024 season was particularly noteworthy for the Orange. They clinched their inaugural ACC championship, with standout performances leading to multiple All-ACC honors for rowers, coxswains and coaches. At the NCAA Championships, Syracuse secured an 11th-place overall finish, narrowly missing the top ten by a single point. The team’s consistent performance throughout the season against top-ranked opponents reflects the program’s dedication and growth.
